This painting was originally created to accompany an as-yet-unpublished book by Ferrell
Snow but instead saw publication with Die Drachenfestung by Jane Welch, produced by
the German publishing house Droemer Knaur in December 1998
Vengeance in Ice was accepted into Spectrum 5: the Best in Contemporary Fantastic
Art (Underwood Books, 1998).
Vengeance in Ice (oil on canvas, 28" x 36") was a labor of love inspired by
an unpublished novel by Ferrell Snow. It conveys a past, present and future.
I had been working on the sketches for a while when I awoke one morning and just for a
fleeting flash of a moment saw the shape of the horse and rider. I immediately
sketched it out. I continued sketching other concepts to talk myself out of this
one, but found it unbeatable.
I didn't want stark lighting - I wanted soft light from the blue dome of the sky for a
far north feel. The lighting is so subtle it took two months to paint. In a
painting like this, it's as crutial what to leave out as what to put in.
