Black
as Blood This piece was Charles' first commission from Baen Books, for Rob Chilson's Black as Blood (1998 Baen Books). The book has a sixties "Creepy" feel to it - horror with a sense of humor. The painting is meant to evoke that attitude. Black as Blood was chosen for inclusion in Spectrum 6: the Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art (1999 Underwood Books).

Butcher's
Bill This painting is available as a print. This painting was cover art for The Butcher's Bill by David Drake (Baen Books, 1998), part of the author's Hammer's Slammers series. After reading the stories I started sketching, knowing I wanted a sense of the speed and power of the tanks and cars Drake writes about. The stories are gritty and dirty, so I really wanted the whole scene to show that as well. Butcher's Bill (oil on canvas, 24" x 36") was my first cover for a science-fiction book |
